昔日長州藩將刀鐔出口列為藩政要務，因而長州鐔傳世甚豐，其數量之冠，堪稱日本之最。得益於諸多傳世珍品皆留有銘文，使眾多名工之諱得以流芳。其中尤以中井、河治兩家為魁首，岡田、岡本、金子、中原、藤井、井上以及八道等諸家亦名噪一時。
然而，八道一系並未留下完整譜系，且此鐔僅落門派之銘，未鐫刻工匠個人之名諱。雖能確鑿其為江戶時期之作，惟更精細之造期現已不可考。
此鐔正反兩面皆佈有錯落之菊葉，意境疏朗；葉尖凝露則以「金色繪」工藝精巧點綴，頗具畫龍點睛之妙。其器形雖略顯寬宏，然份量中正稱手，若配予稍長之御刀，不論何種規制，皆能相得益彰，盡顯高雅氣韻。
